About Book Are GEMS / Non-Profit Org

Book Are GEMS is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization whose mission is to promote literacy in El Paso, Texas. Our mission began in 2003 with the tragic loss of our founder's young daughter, Gracie. Paula, Gracie's mother, to keep her daughter's love for reading and compassionate heart alive began collecting and distributing books at local schools in low income areas of our city. With strong support from the community, the bookstore GEMS GEMS was created. With the change of location came the name change to Books Are GEMS. Since our humble beginning, we have given away 1 million books to children in our community at no cost to parents.Our main program is our bookstore program, "6 Free Books!". This program allows us to give 1 new book and 6 gently used books each month to every child that comes into our store at no cost to the families. Our goal is to make books easily accessible to all children and their parents, thereby increasing literacy, fluency and comprehension in both children and their parents.
